Close your eyes. Now picture in your mind that you are 32 years old and a single mother of three children, ages 6 months, 3 and 5 years old. You have 2 part-time cleaning jobs: one at a school in Reston and the other at a Fairfax hospital. Now just imagine how it feels that no matter how hard you try, you’re never able to earn enough money to pay the bills and buy enough food. The baby is fussy and not gaining the weight she should. Your middle child is always crying and cranky. And your oldest is very quiet and doesn’t seem to have the energy of a 5 year old. Imagine how worried you are about if and how things will ever get better.
These are the people Food for Others helps. They are why we will hold our sixth annualEmpty Bowls fundraiser so that Food for Others can continue to help families with emergency food needs. Won’t you join us and help too?? One out of 4 children lives in poverty without enough to eat and 1 out of 6 adults.
On Friday, April 12, 2013, The Giving Circle of HOPE will hold its Empty Bowls fundraiser. This benefit will help with hunger relief in Northern Virginia. It will be held at Floris United Methodist Church at 13600 Frying Pan Rd in Herndon Virginia. Funds raised will go to Food for Others. Won’t you join our community effort and become a sponsor?
Does it surprise you that we have a problem with hunger in Northern Virginia? Over 180,000 residents in Fairfax County lack the means to meet basic needs like putting enough food on the table for their families. These are the families that Food for Others helps.
Food for Others provides thousands of families with a safety net in emergency situations and the working poor who are struggling to make ends meet. The number of people Food for Othershas helped just in the past two years has increased by 20%. Since 2009, the number coming to Food for Others for emergency food help increased 138%! And there’s no indication the number in need will go down any time soon. Currently they provide emergency food to over 500 families every night. As the number of families continues to rise, our fundraiser becomes even more important.
Food for Others helps those who come to its warehouse and to 15 other distribution sites throughout Fairfax and Arlington counties and Falls Church. It also helps 30 other non-profits including food pantries, shelters and after school food programs. The service they provide is huge and they need our help – all of our help — to keep up with the increasing demand. With each dollar donated, they can collect and distribute food for 6 meals.
At our Empty Bowls fundraiser, for a minimum donation of $20 a guest receives a simple soup supper and a handmade ceramic bowl to keep as a reminder that there are people in our community with “empty bowls”. Everything is generously donated by our supporters – the handcrafted bowls from local potters, the freshly prepared food from local restaurants and bakeries and the facility where we have the event. The Giving Circle of HOPE members and numerous Girl Scout troops volunteer their time to put on the event. ALL DONATIONS go directly to Food for Others to provide food.
Can we count on you for your support? In return for your valuable sponsorship, we will recognize you in our local releases, our newsletter and on our website, and in our program and promotional materials.
If this message touches your heart and is something you would like to be a part of, there are many ways to help. You can purchase tickets to attend the event, be a sponsor, or become a volunteer.
