Breast Cancer. Everyone is affected by this disease either through fighting it themselves or knowing someone who is a fighter. It is the second leading cause of cancer in women after lung cancer with more than 2.5 million survivors in the United States alone. One woman in eight in the US will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of her lifetime. Yes, this is a topic that is near and dear to everyone’s heart (and bosom). There is much one can do to take preventative steps away from cancer, and much one can do to support those in the throngs of battling cancer. Lifetime has partnered with Walmart and Susan G. Komen for the Cure to produce a film called “Five”, an anthology of 5 short films that explore the impact of breast cancer on people’s lives, directed by Jennifer Aniston, Demi Moore, Alicia Keys, Penelope Spheeris and Patty Jenkins. Breast cancer knows no boundaries as this piece presents five women with various backgrounds and different stages in life with different stages of cancer. Check out this beautiful film on Lifetime (set to next air on Saturday, Oct 16 at 4pm) or on www.mylifetime.com/movies/five where you can watch the movie, learn more about how you can help support the cause and even sign a petition to end the practice of “drive-through” mastectomies. The purpose of this project is to not only raise awareness of this epidemic, but to prompt more women to have mammograms. Other ways to become involved include:
Ford has dedicated more than $110 million to the cause. Their commitment runs well beyond raising funds. They know that awareness leads to early detection and early detection saves lives, and are also working to increase breast cancer awareness,
This October, Walgreens will donate $1 to Susan G. Komen for every new registration at Walk with Walgreens: A program that rewards and tracks your walking progress. It contains a wonderful and supportive community as you incorporate more movement into your life – a fundamental to having a healthy lifestyle.
